Start with Space Wolves lore.
Definitely one of the least crazy Chapters of Space Marines. That, and they have the oldest living Space Marine still alive.

Occasionally he appears, kills everything and then vanishes back into the Warp to keep killing things. He's that overpowered GW stuck him in the Warp because they went too far and had no way of bringing it back in line. Would you believe that Matt Ward got slightly carried away?

I know Necrons have the potential to wreck everyone to no end if they focused all their power into conquering one planet at a time.

Yeah, it honestly boils down to Orks (Waagh), Chaos (Crazy shit), Tyranids (Numbers), and Necrons (Tech) duking it out to win. If Humanity, the Eldar, and the Tau don't get their shit together and realize why they're stupid and who the real enemy is, we're all screwed.

I've played DoW 1 and 2, 40k Ultramarine, and Space Hulk. Haven't played tabletop due to cost and distance from GW store.

If you haven't already seen it, look up Space Hulk: Deathwing. It's out this year sometime, and it's looking like it'll be amazing.

Oh yeah I saw that! Looks excellent from what I've seen so far. I played Spacemarine and thoroughly enjoyed it and this looks to be similar in some ways. Seems like a good time to be a warhammer fan

It is. If they fix the issues with Eternal Crusade, the 40k Space Marine formula could make a return, in a massive way.
