1. Well technicaly the universe IS one big "glare" but since our eyes can only see a tiny fraction of the electromagnetic spectrum we can only see the physical colours. Technology that can see the whole electromagnetic spectrum will prove to you there's alot more going on in those blank spaces that we just can't see.
2. Things are to far away to see, yes photons can travel infinity but there too small to pick up on. Sort of like you know there's atoms in the air but you can't see them, just like the dark spots in space, light from there is hitting you all the time but you just can't see it, too small/too far away.
