Maybe an infusion like system, but instead of deleting the blue item it gets fused into an appearance slot?
This would be permanent unless you destroyed the appearance item or fused another item into is slot.

In think Transmogrification does that, I can't remember but didn't WoW implement that system for cosmetics? Either way, it is a good idea that would help a long way with free customization. So many blues, even greens, have their designs wasted as it is now.

Honestly never played WoW, but I imagine transmog is something very similar. I was simply trying to describe a "Destiny" version of how that idea might look.
