Actually, it's the other way around. With SBMM, bad players play only bad players so their KDs are falsely high. Good players play only good players so their KDs are falsely low. The only way you can use KD to compare people is if they play against the same general population...

A Heavy Weight boxer continuously wailing on feather weights isn't an indication of skill due to him 'playing against the general population', but being able to continuously beat those in the same league of him is a fair indication of skill. Either way, as long as we're not being matched based on skill, KD can't be an indication of skill.
