Edited by nater909: 4/9/2016 4:06:19 AMif you ask a companion to trade with you and immediately hit A (or X) on the robot workbench, two menus will show up. Also make sure you have no resources in the workbench first. You also have to have 2 different types of robot torsos. Now use the left analog stick to navigate your way to the torso section and mash A (or X) on the type of body the robot does not have equipped. You'll see items being transferred from your inventory to your companions. You often have to switch between you and your companions inventories as they have a weight limit..... sorry if that was poorly described.
