Pop punk literally doesn't make sense as a genre.

  • Punk was created as a genre to exist for the counterculture. The genre itself is the exact opposite of pop. Something can have the sound of punk but can also not be punk at the same time.

  • A common argument made by purists. Artists that confine themselves to a single genre without ever branching out are incredibly boring imo, but you ultimately have to label each band under a single defining genre for the purposes of streamlining sales. If there was a genre for every single distinct style, it would be impossible to subdivide any system meant for distribution. Thus, these artists are labeled as "punk" based on the rhythm and chord structure that they share with more traditional punk bands like the Clash, but are defined by their pop undertones to most audiences. Call it an oxymoron if you wish, but it's a very real style.

  • Just listened to the band, sounds nothing like punk. They're more of an alt rock if anything. And I disagree on branching out. I believe the music has more to do with the creative mind behind it. The White Stripes are still good after all this time sticking with rock because Jack White is an amazing musician. The Raconteurs (also started by Jack White) are also in the rock genre but clearly have their own distinct sound. He's even made solo albums where he's experimented with different styles and still kept up quality. Then you have a band like the Black Eyed Peas that should have stuck with their original genre. I don't know what they do now, but it's atrocious. The same kind of goes for the Red Hot Chili Peppers. While their new stuff isn't horrible, it doesn't have that same feel their old stuff did. It's very pop-y now and seems meant more to move sales. Punk is a way of life. Punk is the counterculture. You can call me a "purist" all you want, but pop punk can't exist. That's like trying to say an apple is also an orange. It's not and never will be. You can be alt rock or pop rock or whatever, but pop punk is just an oxymoron.
