only the first time you buy it off the wall will it cost legendary marks, after that it will cost 1 exotic shard, and something like 2500 glimmer (I think) -
use about 20 motes of light to max it out, (but don't buy any of the nodes)
Dismantle for 2 shards.
repeat this. for as many exotic shards as you want, it just costs 2500 glimmer and 20 motes per shard...

See, I thought it cost a shard and 2500 if you never discovered the item, but bought it from a vendor (xur). But if you discover it, it just cost the marks... So basically the best way is to buy the item (Mida in my case), pop a primary telemetry, use motes of light until maxed, but don't actually equip the upgrades, and dismantle for 2 shards? Then repeat except the Mida will now cost me 1 shard and 2500?

Thanks twin! I think that method is the best of all I have heard (I know other people have mentioned it in this thread--thanks to you all too!) ... now I am wishing I didn't blow 100+ motes on dead orbit... *facepalm

...and I usually buy the weekly exotic weapon from Xur (if there is one) and level it up for 2 shards. Most of my 3oC weapons go to shard nowawdays. (note- the leveling thing really only works for weapons, it works for armor, but takes more like 100 motes to level up armor, so not cost effective...)
