Fast detonation like you suggested would make it OP and incredibly annoying. Defenders are perfect.

I could see how that would be a problem but those grenades are very situational. Especially on smaller boards. Two of the warlocks supers can straight out pop the bubble any time. Why not give the defender a way to shut it down as it approaches.
