North Carolina is nice, if you enjoy plenty of open space. Or living by the water, if you choose to live near the coast. I live in Virginia, less than an hour away from the border to North Carolina, so I make trips down there from time to time.
Don't know much about South Dakota, since i've never been. Might be nice too.
