I thought humanity was at the brink of extinction. They still had like 12 billion people left. We dont even have that much now.

If you look at the numbers, no we weren't going to go extinct. But in the context of a war, we were VERY close to extinction. If the UNSC was defeated at Earth, all coordinated defense of humanity would practically disappear. Any time the Covenant found humanity, it'd be a guaranteed defeat for us. More than that, as I said, 23 billion was the casualties by October, NOT accounting for the incoming attack on Earth which had a population of 10 billion. And we know that Earth did sustain casualties numbering in the billions. How much is unknown though. I'm of the opinion that the majority was killed, because by 2553 Earth only had a population of 200 million. That number is a result of deaths and evacuations though.
