Make sure to take as much advantage as possible of being able to attack in the middle of movement and then continue and finish your movement. In 3.5 you used to have to take an entire line of 3 feats to do that, but now it's in the vanilla rules for everyone.
Also, stay away from 2 weapon fighting if you are either proficient with shields or martial weapons because sadly, 2 weapon fighting is worthless now. It's meh-okay up until level 5 or 6 when a martial class would get Extra Attack.
Also, try out being a fighter. They're absolutely amazing now.
If you want to be cheesy-ish, play a Bard and enter the College of Valor. You'll get a class feature later on that lets you cast a spell and then make a single attack with a weapon as a bonus action. With that you could use the cantrip True Strike and then gain its benefits on the same turn (advantage on an attack roll) or Blade Ward which gives resistance to non-magical weapon damage for 1 round so you can tank and still stab someone.

Yeah I'm a fighter, my DM has recently made up a lot of stuff such as a Gol its a human who has been effected by a magical explosion a 100 years ago in a war that wiped out the whole battlefield and I has given me a stone arm that has magical capabilities like mage hand and its 8xs the human strength but I do have a lot of disadvantages
-
Does that mean it will have 160 strength if you have 20 naturally? If your DM says no, he's full of shit.
-
No I have 20 strength, my arm does 2d8 +5 damage. There's limits of how strong I am, I mean I can't just arm wrestle a Dragon but my character has PTSD( disadvantage on everything, chance of hitting allies, very low wisdom and intelligence, and basically bat shit crazy), Can't duel weild with any other weapons, bit my arm counts as great weapon fighting archetype and dueling archtype( since it counts as one weapon and requires basically my all my strength to use it)
-
Jesus. Can you use a shield still?
-
Yeah, can't wear armor though my AC is 18 + 2 the sheild
-
That's pretty bitchin' altogether
-
I like you, you shall receive a follower!
-
Can my follower be able to cast grease at will as a bonus action or reaction?
-
Why the hell not! *throws grease on to troll*
-
Perfect.
Honestly, try to get your DM to make a magic item or something that does that. In the right situation, grease is as powerful as Wish.
