Is your inventory full? If there's no open spot for shard to go into (or a spot that already has a shard for others to stack on top of), then tehy just disappear.

Thanks. Yeah, as soon as I finished typing I found them at the postmaster.

Cool, I figured they'd just disppear, since in most situations the game defaults to screwing you over :)
