Because we honestly didn't have the technology or knowledge til now. Einstein predicted it and his calculations worked but there was no actual proof until now. This is honestly astronomical. Pun intended

My physics/biology teacher also explained how it could possibly (key word) be used. She said imagine holding a string tight between two fists. Now imagine moving the hands closer together and the string bends. In theory, this could also mean bending the string or wave could bring two places closer together
