I really enjoyed season 1 to 5 and the film that followed. Season 6 to 9 were good but lacked in quality and suffered from an overuse of comedy. The last movie from 2008 was good but not great.
I've seen the 1st two episodes of the new season and so far so good :)

I feel like those last few season's downfall was the annoying forcing of plot down your throat

I agree and furthermore some episodes contained some contrivances thus the only thing keeping the show together were David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson (until David left and got replaced by Robert Patrick aka T-1000).
