Sometimes I've noticed with quests such as this is that if you are not doing damage to the boss right before it died you may not get credit.
Make sure you are doing damage at least within the last 30 seconds of his life.
Sometimes if you are busy with adds and a teammate kills the boss you may not get credit even if you did help earlier

That's the weird thing though. @Carlito Hashiba, my fireteam leader and clan leader is at the same exact step. We both got the count on Valus Tlu'urn. The most recent attempt to get Valus Mau'ual to count (last night), he was not only the fireteam leader, but he got the kill with a shotgun and was alive to see Valus Mau'ual die. But it didn't count for him. I blasted Valus Mau'ual exclusively with my shottie (Immobius and also 4th Horseman to see if changing guns made a difference) and nothing for me either. The final attempt before we moved on, I did get damage on Valus Mau'ual and was killed by him as I was pretty much tanking and just plugging him in the head, damage be damned. You make some great points, @Kellogs. Thank you. I'm just stumped as I have run this quest step nine times or so since the start of the year with no joy on completion. :\
