I did it a few weeks ago and it seemed really easy. Maybe you had bad luck and it was lagging out.

I do seem to recall having some targeting issues during the Vex wave so you may be on to something.

It has happened to about every boss in the game with me. Try for hours one day with everything not working then come back the next day and smash it in 10 mins. Good luck next time mate.
