It doesn't on the internet.
It's just a cheap dig, to dullen points, when a logical counter point can't be made. That, and it's for kids to attempt to "look cool" in front of their community of choice.
I remember this same type of behavior was displayed every day in high school, with people constantly making fun of people.
Grammar, spelling, etc. doesn't really matter on the internet, as long as people can figure out what you're trying to say. And nornally when they're acting like they can't, it's an issue with the said person's critical thinking skill.

Look cool? I don't know how it makes people look cool. I also do not understand why or how it's faster to "typ lik dis". You don't really save much time, unless you're bad typing/spelling and type.....l....i.....k......e...........t.......h...i.....s. I average about 150 words per minute on a keyboard. English class in highschool was a breeze for me. Out of everyone from grades 10-12, I was literally the only one in every class that would read and write. Everyone else was too concerned with "being cool" and sex and money. For me, I cannot understand what goes on in people's head, even after taking psychology and sociology courses. It boggles my mind that we're all biologically the same/similar, but some of us are just..... "not smart". I get there's medical conditions, but for those who don't have them, there is no excuse for it. I forgot where I was going with this. I looked away for a second and totally blanked. I had a point. Uhh... shit. Um. Though you are right about it not really being a big deal on the internet, there are those like me who will continue to define the intelligence of others based on their grammar and spelling. After all, for most of us, English is our first language and we were raised to speak it, write it, and type it for most years of our life. I totally lost my point here. Oh well, I wrote a comment that I think came across well?

Edited by The Brostradamus: 12/30/2015 4:54:45 PMWould you like for me to explain why we aren't all equally intellectual? It has to do with the infrastructure of the world, and how drastically different it is mile to mile. We aren't all raised by the same people, in the same environment, with the same structure, in the same place, with the same starting education level. Just because someone was born in a shitty situation, doesn't mean you should lord it over there head. In my opinion. Well thought out point. I think we are in agreement. Good to see another sane, rational human being on these forums, lol.

My points were more for those in school or have graduated. There's no excuse, mental conditions exempt, for anyone to be so... stupid after 12 years of schooling. It just bothers me. 12 years of education and a mentally healthy person honestly cannot read or write? But they sure as hell know what to do when it comes to sex, money, and cars.

Ah, but grammar and spelling IS important, even on the internet. Sure there are times when it is perhaps less important, just as in real life, but that does not mean it is not important on the internet as a whole. In fact, if you are trying to have a debate in any written communication, then both grammar and spelling is paramount. The reason is that you cannot assume the person you are communicating with will correct all your mistakes in the proper fashion to make your argument make sense. For example, lets take this poorly written sentence: Hay should eat grandma. First, this is technically a proper, if odd, statement. It is stating that hay, the dried grass you typically associate with livestock, should eat a grandmother. So that right there is correction someone could take ( A): I said that hay should eat a grandmother). Now lets look at another correction someone could make B) Hey, we should eat grandma. Now the target of the debate thinks I said we should eat a grandmother. Finally we have another correction: C) Hey! We should eat, grandma! Now if you have several points in an argument that could be corrected/interpreted in more than one way , your argument is going to fall through and you will need to start again. Even if you had valid points, you now need to go back and use the correct spelling and grammar to make your points understood. So now you have made a first impression of not being able to express yourself and you still end up using correct spelling and grammar. All that said, in times when your character count is limited or you are charged by the character length, then shortcuts are understandable. However, that is not all the internet. Even being short on time is not a really excuse depending on what you are typing. How much time is saved typing u over you.
-
You're speaking about comprehension. If someone actually wrote the sentence in your example, I would know exactly what they're talking about due to comprehension. If someone were to draw the conclusion that they are going to be eating they're grandma later on, I would argue their comprehension skill is lacking. Same thing with all the arguments for to, two, too, their, there, and they're. All comprhension, and in vocal communication, wouldn't even be discussed. There are some fun brain games you can do concerning comprehension, and grammar. Its amazing what the human brain can decipher pretty easily. I will concede that proper spelling and grammar does help for people with a low comprhension skill, or if your grammar is so incredibly bad that someone can't tell what you're saying. But for the 99.9% of grammar and spelling mistakes I see on the internet that are corrected, are a waste of time. As the person should have a comprhension skill high enough to not even have to think about it.

Millennial thinking.
-
I require further explanation. I have no idea what "millennial thinking" is supposed to imply.
-
The idea that things that might be "hard" don't matter. Laziness justifying ignorance. Grammar is simple,, and there's no reason to think otherwise. To dismiss it because "it's the Internet" is so stupid it hurts.
-
No offense, but you sound like someone who's brain has degraded due to time so long, that you no longer have the ability to adapt and change. Me wanting to save time, productivity, efficiency, and in some circles, potentially money, by going around outdated mechanisms is completely logical. You only cling to your ideals, and attack new ideals because you no longer have the ability to adapt. I bet you also hate modern music, and slang, if I had to guess, lol.
-
More Millennial babble. You think this is "new"? The world's been around awhile. It hasn't changed that much in the x-teen years you've been on it, and isn't going to change that much when you've left it. When you get a real job, and have to pay your own bills (all of them), get back to me. Let me know little grammar, and knowing how to properly express yourself in type, matter. Always be better. Everyone doesn't get a trophy out there. Be BETTER.
-
Grammar itself has changed over the last thousand years drastically. To the point where it's unrecognizable. Even America only since it's founding, it's changed incredibly. You make no logical points, and speak incorrect information. And although it doesn't pertain to the conversation at hand, I have a house, job, and just proposed last week.
-
Unrecognizable? So you don't understand the Declaration of Independence when you read it? You REALLY think people will be writing articles, not comments, but actual articles, on the Internet in slang? Dangling participles and all? Doubt it.
-
*faceplam* America didn't exist a thousand years ago. And you're the one attempting to attack my intelligence? Lol. Let me space out my words so you can better understand them. A thousand years ago, language was drastically different ALMOST (keyword here, pay attention) unrecognizable. Even the founding of America, they had a very different language (slang, sentence structure, proper words were different) to start with. Do you understand? Or do you really want to aruge that the "proper" grammar and spelling has been around since dawn of time, and there is only one right way, lol.
-
Edited by TheBigChicklet: 12/30/2015 5:31:18 PMYou're a special kind of stupid aren't you? See how that works? You jumped from "when America was founded" to "thousands of years". That's a difference of 200 years ago to the birth of Christ. They aren't remotely the same, and neither strengthens your argument. The DoI is VERY recognizable. Move the slider all you want, try to be "right" all you want. You're wrong. And possibly an idiot. Get that checked.
-
Wow. I cant even. Just no.
-
All three of those sentences are incomplete. The irony of your post is astounding.
-
The irony of that reply lmao
-
The irony of your own reply, which is on the internet, is even more astounding.
-
And now you understand why grammar and sentence structure DOES matter on the internet.
-
In fact, I think I've proven it doesn't. Judging by your own replies.
-
Edited by YippeeKiyay_MFer: 12/29/2015 4:05:14 PMWell if that's what you think, then I'm recommending that you also take a Logic course. Because saying that grammar doesn't matter on the internet, and then correcting the grammar and sentence structure of the replies you get, is the definition of illogical
-
Edited by The Brostradamus: 12/29/2015 4:11:11 PMAnd you don't think saying it does matter with incomplete sentences isn't? I was trying to point out how ironic that was. Not trying to correct you. I understood what you meant. I guess my response was ironic, but it had to be, to point out the first irony. I personally don't care you use incomplete sentences. Everything I've said in my original response remains true. And this pointless banter that's happened after this is proof positive, lol.
