Pleb means peasant.

No it doesn't. It means common people. It referred to any free people of Rome that weren't part of the royal family. Peasant and plebian are not interchangeable

Common people means everyone from lower class to even upper class. Even people who are wealthy doesn't mean they are an elite member of society like a politician. Peasant refers to the surf system of medieval times as the lowest member of that cast system. Peasant refers to only the lowest of class. In all reality 80% of a countries population is a Plebian
