It's overrated. Honestly, the most important stats in destiny you can manipulate are recovery and agility. Armor just doesn't make a huge difference, only in a very small set of circumstances.

Surviving shoulder charge is useful

The armor bonus from the Ram stacked with the subclass-specific armor bonus from any piece of body armor allows you to survive some specific attacks that you normally wouldn't survive in the crucible.

Well the ram also activates life steal on hit even if your melee ability isn't fully charged yet ;)
