That review seemed so bias right from the start. In my opinion it was a great movie, all of the characters were great and the new ones are original. I personally think Kylo Ren was a great villian, people have to realize though that he isn't at the Vader level yet, he's essentially an evil padawan. John Boyega was great as Finn. Just as Daisy Ridley was great as Rey. The review you linked looked like a desperate attempt at getting attention rather than an actual review.

  • You completely missed the context of the review then. Those characters are great (aside from another whiny Anakin), and I think they did a solid job. Daisy Ridley easily stole the show. The movie was A New Hope 2.0. Can't argue that.

Hmmm, who does Kylo Ren want to be? Oh thats right Darth Vader. So since he's acting like a whiny Anakin, he's on the right track.

  • Not so much that, it's just that we've seen it before. No one can seriously be okay with the temper tantrum the guy had a few times... Been there done that and was just as excruciatingly bad in this movie as it was when Hayden Christensen did it.

  • Also when your plans keep failing because your stormtroopers can't get the job done, what is he suppose to do. Stormtrooper- "Sir, we weren't able to retrieve the map to luke skywalker" Kylo Ren- "Oh that's ok, I didn't really want it that much anyways. Here's a sticker for at least trying to get the job done"

  • Yes, we've seen it before from the guy that Kylo is tryibg to be, so it really shouldn't be that big of a deal. This is what was wanted, for us to draw similarities between Kylo and Vader/Anakin.

  • I'm sorry but who in the hell would want to see a character mirror another one in an established franchise? I mean I get the justification it's kind of some fan service but at the same time there could have been a litany of ways to create an interesting and compelling villain without having to rely on the crutch of making a character that was similar to one that was in the past. I mean this is Star Wars man... there literally thousands of ways to create a compelling character in the Star Wars universe - that's a bad guy - without having to sacrifice core characters just to give him some "drama."

  • Kylo Ren is a super fan of Vader, his goals are to collect all of Vaders items and eventually be just as powerful as Vader. His character is based around trying to be a copy of Vader. Ren is still in training and hasn't reached full potential yet. Is his character the most original thing ever? No, but his character makes a ton of sense and you can't deny that.

No and that's the thing I wholeheartedly agree with your point about him trying to replicate more or less his icon. He idolizes Vader and wants to - just like he says in the movie - "finish what you started." Do we seriously need a character that is a mirror image in a lot of ways of who he idolizes? Even if in a lot of ways he's kind of gotten those mannerisms because - in a sense - he's in tune with Vader's spirit and dark force aura, they could have had that be a focal point of why he's driven to do what he does. That's all. To go as far as they did (temper tantrums eye roll) and if like you said they're trying to replicate the Anakin Skywalker / Darth Vader character in Kylo Ren, to me that goes back to what I originally said and that they're playing it safe and using that as an easy explanation of why he is the way he is. Long and short of it is I agree with your point, and in a small way it does make sense, but it's a complete cop out.

I see it more as keeping connected to what we already know and love than a cop out. I personally like how Kylo is connected to is to the characters we already know and love and I don't think it would have been as good as if the villian wasn't connected at all. I also have an interesting theory of Kylo's part in the next two movies.
