This is one of the oldest tricks in the book as far as propaganda goes. No matter what the issue, you are pretty much always able to find complete idiots supporting both sides. Just present the idiots of the opposing side as representative of it which is fed to the other side and so the circle of stupid continues until the issue is polarized beyond repair.

Honestly this tactic is probably one of the main reasons politics is so polarized today, with everyone thinking the other guys are idiots.
