Did you buy the physical legendary edition of TTK or the digital (did it come with a disc). If you purchased the physical legendary edition of TTK, you will still have to use the disc in order to play Destiny: The Taken King.
The only way you can play without the disc is by owning the rights to the digital version of the base Destiny game, which came digital legendary edition

Thank you very much for your reply, I did buy the physical version yet I find it strange that my friends, who have the physical version of the base game, and had to play with the disk, suddenly didn't have the use the disk anymore after activating TTK. I find it strange that they don't have to use the disk anymore and I do. Oh well, I guess it can't be helped. :<

Which version of The Taken King did your friends purchase? If they picked up the digital Legendary edition or the digital Collector's Edition, they wouldn't need the disk anymore because those two options come with a license for the digital base game.
