Lord of the Rings was a masterpiece movie trilogy, based off of an even better book trilogy.
The Hobbit was one 300-ish page book, stretched over 3 movies.
Plus, the first hobbit movie was childish as fuc[u]k[/u]. Oh god the lines in that movie were just horrendous.

There's a very good reason for the Hobbit being childish. The Hobbit was originally a story J.R.R. Tolkien told to his kids at night.

Yes, I'm aware the Hobbit was a children's book. But compared to today's definition of childish, it's not very childish at all. A lot less childish than the first movie, at least.
