Until you reach a higher light level you will need rare engrams drops and rewards from vanguard/crucible quests to get your light higher.
I think without legendary marks you can reach about 240 light level.
With matchmaking I will try joking the vanguard strikes list. Most people are high enough to carry you until you get a decent light level. Since it's matchmaking you cannot get kicked out. Just chip in with what you can.

You can reach 290+ without marks what are you talking about.

Understand it in the context of the question. How much light you had until your first legendary engram dropped? Or did you have any legendary gear when you got high enough to have the game let you join a 240 recommended light activity?

You just run the regular strike list and decrypt engrams one at a time. If you get something at a higher light level you equip it. I got to 290 something with just blues.

So once you reach that level you shouldn't have an issue getting marks. But my point is you can get way better gear without needing marks.

Yeah this The only things I've used marks for so far are a purple engram from Xur (bit of a waste of time) and then buying Y2 versions of Y1 exotic weapons. I suppose the only thing I used them for that DID help was buying a 280 ghost from one of the vanguard leaders. But oyu can get to 290+ without spending marks on anything that contributes
