Yeah, no.... Use has a lot to do with it. If everyone is using Thorn, they aren't all using it because it looks pretty.

Well, what did Bungie expect after they completely trashed Auto Rifles and Fusion Rifles? People are naturally going to gravitate towards what works, so in all honesty their numbers are an utter sham.

The point is there needs to be more than one thing that is "what works" (I read that as OP). Like I said people aren't all using pulse rifles because they are neat, they're using them because they are powerful as -blam!-, more powerful than any other weapon class.
