Hi Saltdonyx,
Our records indicate that your characters were level 28 when you stopped playing in Dec 2014, not 32. You can find your activity history, which shows your character level at the time of the activity, on your Bungie.net profile.

When the VIP-status was calculated or system used the highest possible gear combination across all your characters, including items in your vault. The best way to tell would be to visit your Bungie.net profile (click your profile icon in the top-right and choose "Profile"), select a character, then click the "Stats" tab near the top of the page. Then, on the right side of the page, you'll see a list of all of the activities your character has completed in reverse chronological order. Keep scrolling down until you get to the last activity completed prior to your return after The Taken King's release. The level of your character in that activity is typically the maximum level achieved before 8/31.
