They said that they did that for the Legacy Exotic engrams you purchase from Xur, not any new ones you get.

  • This is not what I remember reading even though they did stipulate this part indeed about the Legacy Exotic engrams too. I believe this is 2 different things - maybe I am wrong and many of us are when a lot of forums recommend to quickly purchase the Year 2 blueprints to avoid duplicate drops (of importance I do not mean to say that "if the majority says so then it's right" but rather that if you are correct then the communication from Bungie wasn't good or precise enough). Would you therefore have an official link from Bungie to share that would stipulate that this exclusively applies to the Legacy Exotic engrams?

  • This is from the 9/17/15 weekly update: "Lastly, Xûr will also choose a Legacy Engram every week. These Engrams contain Year One Exotics (at Year One Attack and Defense levels) for players who want to finish up a Collection. They strongly bias towards Exotics not already in your Blueprint Collection, to help fill in the blank slots - excluding Mythoclast and Necrochasm, which are still only available from their Year One sources."

Thank you. You are correct - I remember this one. Still pretty sure I read another one too for all exotics... or this is just my memory failing me :( I am seeing other posts on this forum with many people pissed off too with the exotic duplicates (and we are talking about getting 4-5-6 times the same stuffs). As much as they makes sense, as pointed out in other comments here, for people above 300 light it makes 0 sense whatsoever for the others - Bungie needs to fix this even if this is their way for us to get shards (yet who didn't stockpile them and / or doesn't have tons of year 1 exotics to dismantle and why can't we simply purchase them from Xür like before instead of those stupid duplicates). Another way would be to have less drops, it's almost too much along with the legendaries and packages from vendors - no way to level all the ones I want to, and I play a lot. I'd rather see Bungie getting us less drops and no duplicates than the way it is now (besides the legendaries though because they always come with a different roll and class and it's always nice to get 3 legendary engrams when one dismantle them). Oh well, there may not be a perfect solution to keep everyone happy...

  • However, thinking about it, I can see a use for those extra exotics. To infuse an exotic weapon or piece of armor, an exotic shard is required. Instead of having to break down the exotics you use to infuse another one, you get extra shards from the duplicate exotics you receive.

  • Correct and discussed in this post since Xür is not selling the shards any longer (this doesn't make sense to me or they should at least come as drops during missions or from engrams like the motes of light and strange coins). There's no perfect solution like I said. In my case I had saved tons of shards before the release of the Taken King (I still have 19 after many exotic infusions + all the Year 1 exotic I can dismantle any time) so this doesn't help. If this is what Bungie has in mind, I call it a fail: the frustration of getting duplicates does not cover for the extra shards - this is bad marketing, IMHO...

  • Also, less drops would not be a viable solution, as it would make it harder to get gear of a higher light than what you have. The more engrams you get, the more chances you have of getting something with better defense/attack than what you already have.

  • Trust me, I share the frustration. I managed to get 2 primary exotic engrams, only for them both to turn into Suros Regimes.

  • The frustration seems to be shared by many as I am finding more and more posts on the forum about this very subject (including at least one where Xür/Bungie posted "This" just to acknowledge it, I would assume)... Glad to see we are not alone and hopefully Bungie can rethink this all thing...
