He got Gally from a crucible match while having the worst K/D in the match. It was when Destiny first came out. Which was a pretty big deal considering how shitty RNG was back then.
The one that you see around the forums now is not the original. He's just someone that saw an opportunity to try and cash in on the fame. And it worked. The original was an Xbox player. The imposter made a PSN account with the same.
