That means people got up on the plates in the wrong order

But I was able to get to the top but couldn't pick it up. I thought they disappeared if you weren't in right order

No the plates just appear in the wrong order and you can't grab the relic

On every platform, there should be an orb. You need to collect every single one in order to be able to pick the relic up. If someone jumps on the totems in the wrong order, the orbs wont spawn.
