You seem like a man in the know....I'm not really much of a raider, so I was wondering what the highest light level I can get would be (without raid gear).

You can get to 307. To do think, you'll need to *somehow* get a 300 ghost shell, as well as all 300 level gear, then pick up multiple 310 extoics per armor and weapon slot, then infuse. After all of that, you will be unable to get a Ghost Shell, Class Item or Relic above 300, leaving you at exactly 307 light. And that will take time, brother. I recommend you jump in with a random group and do the raid. I have 25 completions and 309 from almost all random groups, so it works.

Expect no higher than 300 unless you get lots of 310 exotics to infuse, try raiding though you can go on destiny lfg to find easy groups!

I have a 310 exotic sword. Not sure how I'd find a 310 piece of armor without a raid.
