I think it just says you have a chance at more rewards. key word being chance. and the benefit of using shards is it gives you the chance to get both exotics and any item from the raid. because like the past raids each chest/section has it's own loot table. the shards bypass this and allow you to get any raid piece at the end. but again only a chance.
