Living on forever is a kind of grey area for me. If it was as most big religions portray it, as in having a spiritual form of yourself, body included, in some sort of paradise, then count me in. As long as my friends and family as of now joined me, that would be amazing, although, realistically, we'd all die at different times, and so there would be several years with gaps in my friend/family circle, which would be tough. Whether you believe in it or not, I can't see the concept of a kind of good afterlife not appealing to people.

 • As I was saying to Micro, the concept of eternal life or consciousness would inevitably become unbearably hellish to me. That's not to say I don't care for the people I keep close, or that i'm not grateful to have them. I really am, and the idea of living in a form of paradise would be appealing at first, perhaps even for a large stint of time, but eventually it would just destroy me. There's something about self-awareness and consciousness that eats away at me, not noticeably at first, but after a while it becomes very problematic.

 • That could just be a simple effect the brain has on our thoughts to change them according to what our body's can withstand. If our souls are separate from our body, you may even tolerate a good afterlife for the rest of eternity.

 • I would be inclined to agree with you, but it feels more deeply interwoven than just in the physical form. Of course, perception can be trickery, inside and out. So i'll just be waiting.

 • I suppose I could see that, although based on what I know about you, you think about this sort of stuff on a different and much deeper level than most do. The way I see it is, as long as it's an eternal afterlife where I am also eternally happy, then it would pretty much be the best thing I could hope for. If it's basically just a repeat of this life or something that I don't currently understand, I'm not sure how I would feel about it.

 • That's the thing, though. It's the nature of human emotions to vary, regardless of external stimuli, hence why boredom and emptiness can be found in even the most well-off of individuals. It's simply not within the nature of the human condition for one to constantly experience one singular emotion throughout their entire waking existence. However, since we are speaking hypothetically, it could be possible to "override" this condition and induce a euphoric state of happiness well beyond a natural length, except then you have to battle with the notion of whether this "artificial" state of happiness or joy could be considered genuine enough to continue experiencing, or seem hollow since it's being induced by an outside influence. But even that idea operates on the assumption that the human condition is still a factor at that point, which could be faulty since the possibilities become limitless when questioning inherently inhuman concepts. There are simply a lot of things to consider, or dismiss, or both. It's a conundrum of sorts.

 • Pretty much, which is why I don't dwell on it much. There's the way I like to think it would be, the ways I hope it wouldn't be, and then there's countless other ways it could be that I can't possibly understand right now. When it comes down to it, it doesn't really matter much to me as of now, seeing as in the end, it's pointless to try and understand it until it actually happens (or doesn't). Live in the moment.

 • All too true, but it's still interesting to contemplate, at least for me.
