  • One person said that, one time and it was never mentioned again. Yet some people seemed to hold on to that one statement by random dev as gospel. Can you tell me the name of said developer? Can you find the video posted on any gaming site as news? Some dev was talking out of his ass and that's supposed to mean that Bungie lied about everything. Give it a rest people. I believed it when I heard it, but my critical thinking skills kicked in when I never heard it again and I began to temper my expectations. Anyway the game is fun it sucks its not a Skyrim type world but I'm enjoying myself which is why I bought the game. If the game you're playing now upsets you go buy one you'll like better life is too short for BS like this.

  • Lol, it's not just that one time that some are still pissed about. It's about how Bungie's entire PR for the game was a lie. No one expected the drivel we were given at launch.

  • This is true there was clearly a lot that was changed from what they intended to release. My point is that this one quote is what seems to be thrown around as proof of deception.

  • Eh, it's just one of the most memorable parts of the deception. I think it's fine and doesn't matter too much as long as it makes people remember the point: Bungie lies, and has a colorful history of it.

  • I'd like to see more proof of deception then. At this point I've started thinking that it's just something that people say because it was believed to be so. Also since when has a game not changed during development? Sometimes developer make promises they can't keep for whatever reason, but that doesn't mean they blatantly lied. I don't see them sitting down for a meeting and going, "Okay, what can we say we're doing that will get people to buy our game?" Destiny is a blast to play and that's all I want from my video games. I've said it before stop following every step of a games development and you'll have less chance for disappointment.

  • Proof of deception? Look it up. The past forum posts, news articles, reviews--- you can't miss it. You may be right that devs don't sit around thinking what they can say they're doing or adding to a game to make it sell. That's marketing's job after all. And this is Activision we're talking about too, or are you unaware of their past? Sure Destiny is fun, but it's not as fun as it could have been. That's what irks me and other people.

  • I'm completely aware of everything that was said about Destiny pre-launch. I followed it religiously, which is why I know of the video where the guys says you can go anywhere. It's just been a year and people need to move on Destiny isn't gonna be what you want it to be, or expected it to be. And since it isn't how do you know for a fact that what you would rather have would be more fun than what we do have. This game is gonna change and evolve over the next ten, well nine now, years so maybe some of what they wanted to add will be there. Try making games sometime. It's not as easy as the people who complain make it out to be.

  • For one, I know that a story would have existed, one that was far more cohesive than the patch up they quickly shipped out. Having solid well explained reasons why you're doing certain things in the game makes it a lot more fun. A wonderful narrative would have enhanced so much! First impressions are very important, and I can't shake away the terrible impression Destiny gave me at the beginning. Only reason I'm still around is because the combat is really fun. I know games are not easy to make, but do you think consumers care when they buy something expecting what was advertised, and get another thing entirely different? All sorts of products out there, not just games, are not easy to make. But just because something isn't easy to make doesn't give you a free pass to screw it up and ship it out with false marketing. I'm hoping that Destiny evolves ASAP, otherwise my interest will dissipate entirely.

  • I agree about the story, it sucked and was non-existent. My point is for people to stop living in the past. I'm not saying don't speak up about things you like and dislike about the game, but dwelling on the past isn't gonna change the future. Saying a game, or any piece of software for that matter, is gonna have a particular feature isn't an advertisement, they're only speaking about features they hope to be able to add to the game. Even if they said that the story was epic and engrossing and we got what we got that isn't false. Epic and engrossing is subjective to the person experiencing said story. I mention the difficulties of game design because it seems at times people on the forums think Bungie is just rolling in piles of cash and laughing at all of their users. Whatever happened with Destiny I'm sure it was a hard hit for Bungie, but as you've said they work for Activision, which I called as a mistake from the beginning, and they have limits on what they can say or do even if they want to give us everything we want. I'm have a feeling that whatever happened to Destiny is something that hurts the people at Bungie more than use because in the end they're artists and they were only able put out a shell of what they wanted, but they're clearly trying to fix the issue and move forward.

  • I would agree that people shouldn't dwell on the past if Bungie had corrected all of its mistakes and made TTK the most amazing experience ever. But here we are. They've made efforts towards it, things are better, sure. But that's not good enough, especially with the reputation Bungie built up with Halo. Dwelling on the past when those past mistakes still exist to some extent has its purpose to urge fixes and strongly discourage repeats. If developers don't know 100% for sure if something is going to be included in their game, then they shouldn't mention it at all. What's the point of doing so other than creating hype/advertisement? As for the subjective aspect, Bungie can't pull up that BS with their reputation when they've already created "epic and engrossing" narratives with the Halo series, as decided by the consumers and reviewers of Halo. They knew that the story they were pushing out for Destiny (after they lost rights to the original story) was crap compared to what consumers were expecting. The average reviews of consumers decided that the story was not "epic and engrossing". It's hard to pin the blame for all of this between Bungie and Activision, but from the recent court document reveals I've read, Bungie's leadership and Activision's requirements are to blame. I feel sorry for the hard workers at Bungie who get caught in the crossfire, the ones that actually made the game, things like the models, music, game mechanics, and story (original story I mean). But if their leadership is going to continue to pull shenanigans and not let the game become what it was supposed to be, then I won't buy anymore and leave Destiny behind.

  • I think we can agree on most points, but it seems to me that you understand the bigger picture. You mentioned yourself that the writers, musicians, and designers all got screwed. When I think of Bungie I don't think of just the leadership I see all of the parts that make up the whole and that is Bungie. So when people go on a tirade against Bungie you're including all of those people who worked their asses off to make something awesome. I can only guess that a studio like Bungie doesn't sit around thinking of ways to screw over its users. At least I hope not. I'd have to say that most developers announce features that they haven't completed, or aren't sure they're be able to get it to work before launch. The reason they do it isn't nefarious it just that they're gamers and they get excited for their ideas as much as we do when we hear about them. For some reason nothing in particular comes to mind but I know that a lot of games have missing promised features that aren't in the final product. Yet the game is still a success. This is why I say stop following a games development you're only setting yourself up for disappointment no matter how good the game is.

  • Oh yes, I agree, not following a game's development is a good idea. The best way to go about it is know the game will exist, show interest in it, then wait until it releases and gets reviewed. Although nowadays it seems that an increasing amount of devs want people to follow their development and give their input (betas), which I view as hype building and marketing to secure pre-orders or early buy-ins. I have closely watched a few games' development life in the past, and I learned a lot, including just how much bad leadership can ruin a game. When I think of a company, I think of its CEO and management. They're the ones in control, how a product turns out is largely determined by them. It's not to say that talent isn't important, because it is largely so. But it all depends on how that talent is utilized. I won't be looking too much into Bungie anymore (or any game dev company), I'm just going to expect results in their next expansion. No pre-ordering, no sneak peaks, no news. Just 'yae' or 'nay' from my analysis of reviews. Now, I just have a list of games I'm interested in, and periodically look for a release date.
