This is a pretty interesting idea, but I don't think the researchers from the Ishtar collective are supposed to be the ones that built the exos. I think the events in the Vex grimoire are supposed to be happening only shortly before the collapse where I think that the Exo were made long before then. Since there were no guardians (and thus no immortal people) until after the collapse and the near death of the traveler, I don't think they could have existed both back when the exo were first made and when the collapse happened. .

  • See, I believe that the proxy bodies Maya talks about are essentially prototype Exo bodies. It talks about how they need to be rebooted every so often (like we know Exos need). It doesn't come out and directly say it, but that's kind of the way these grimoire cards are. Unfortunately, we don't have enough information to make many other guesses that don't have a wild amount of speculation in them. I think the Exo and the Vex are two of the most fascinating pieces of lore, so I'll definitely follow any cards that come out about those topics.

  • I've gotten the later vex cards since posting this, and I agree now that likely the first exo were actually co-opted exploration robots that the Ishtar collective piloted. This happened shortly before the collapse. Likely the current exo are made from the 227 copies of the four Ishtar scientists and the personalities slowly differentiated over time based on the different experiences of the robots.

  • Dang! Solid speculation! I think maybe there are more than just them, though, but I wouldn't doubt that they make up a good portion. I think in Cayde-6's journal he talks about remembering being human, but then rebooting and changing. He talks about working as a body guard for Maya and falling in love with her (but her not even noticing him). Forgive me if I'm repeating myself. I've been blasting these forums with this stuff for so long I've forgotten what I've said to who.

  • Cayde-6 is probably a copy of Dr. Shim. If you read through the grimoire, their personalities are very similar. Where do you get Cayde's journal from? Also that black rock (or wherever the exo dream of) is probably on Venus, since that is where the bodies of the four scientists are while they are piloting the exploration robots.

Cayde-6's journal Unfortunately, you had to get the legendary edition or something to get it. I don't like having physical copies of games anymore so I didn't want to buy it. It was actually a physical copy of something.
Saturn. No, someplace else. Someplace colder. This moon has been almost completely converted, a SARCOPHAGUS of ice and iron. Stone towers run round with glaciers, rooted deep within a heart of snow. I cam here flesh and bone. Gave everything to the ice. Started over Rebooted.
Possibly Titan (a moon of Saturn), and I think he's referring to the Deep Stone Crypt, where I believe all the human bodies for the Exos are being kept.

  • I just read what you post and I wonder if the journal is supposed to be cannon. The Cayde from the journal seems nothing like the Cayde from the game and that would also mean that the events in the Vex grimoire actually happen well after the collapse, but I guess cayde's journal might jump around in time and the Maya he talks about might end up being an exo already. They say in exo 4 (i think) that the digital representations decided to give themselves human looking representations instead of machine looking ones, so it is possible that Cayde is seeing her for her digital representation and not the machine she actually looks like.

  •
Even now, operating remote bodies by neural link, the team's thoughts are relayed through the warmind who saved them, sandboxed and scrubbed for hazards. Their real bodies are safe in the Academy, protected by distance and neural firewall.
At least originally they were in the academy which is on Venus. If their bodies are preserved in ice or some kind of frozen stone it is possible that the "moon" is really just some type of spherical device which preserves their bodies using cold.
