Protecting the chest if someone finds the spot WITHOUT the scent of the worm, they annihilate anyone there.
Probably to make people think "Huh, immune thrall and a chest I can't open, maybe there's a secret there..."
Unless you can open the chest without the scent, then that's why they're also there.

I'm a noob so I got halfway and bones of eao/bladedanced the rest of the way. :D I need to do it on my Titan so I was thinking I could get 2 friends to stand on some of the platforms so I don't have to waste time holding up my ghost to see.

Lol that works to. I do that for guardians struggling to get across. I pull out ghost for a second to reveal the next 2 stones mid air.
