Because human social, technological, and political progress is horrible and we should all cling to a nonexistent man in the sky. Because when a nuke is about to be dropped on your house it's better to stand outside and pray for God to stop it than be with everyone else in a science-proven bomb shelter. Because the minute chance that God exists and us willing to help us is better to hold on to than supporting new ideas that are guaranteed to help us.

If you seriously think this then you're just being plain childish. You can't talk about the religious and claim that the radical minority is the majority. Many people who are religious are in fact rational and open-minded, and if you're so close-minded that you refuse this, then that's your problem that you should deal with yourself.
