I think the Stranger is Maya Sundaresh. Came to this conclusion yesterday with a friend, only to see that someone on [url=https://www.reddit.com/r/DestinyTheGame/comments/397ph0/the_nature_of_the_exo/]Reddit[/url] already beat us to it. Damn that luck.
But I also think that with the revelation of [url=http://destiny-grimoire.info/#Card-701370]Ghost Fragments: Vex 5[/url], Maya Sundaresh is heavily tied into the Future War Cult. It's fairly obvious that the machine they're using is the same machine the FWC uses, especially with the little nod at the end of the grimoire card...

The Stranger seems set on making [i]you[/i] do something to change the course of history, but refuses to get directly involved herself. (She does kill a Vex that was already dying, however. No real impact on the future.)
Our Ghost notices that she's not a Guardian, and she responds that she wasn't forged in Light. That might indicate that her EXO body was created well before the collapse [speculation]. Up in the quote above, you see Maya talking about the proxy bodies that need resetting, very clearly early EXO technology. We know that the numbers after EXO names are how many times they've reset. Banshee says "How many times have I been reset? 41? 42?..........43?"

Perhaps the Ishtar Research Team (Maya, Chioma, Duane-McNiadh and Shim) saw the usefulness of having a synthetic body and went forward with creating the EXOs.
But I think that with Maya's interest in changing the future, she perhaps became an EXO before they were forged in Light, thereby "living forever." She went into her Future War Cult machine, saw a future of the destruction and wanted to change it. [url=http://destiny-grimoire.info/#Card-104020]Ghost Fragment: The Exo Stranger[/url] points me in that direction. The Exo Stranger is clearly using the FWC machine, and has done it many times too. Seeing as Maya was the first one to ever start it up, even if she wasn't the first to use it, there's a pretty clear connection.
Lots of speculation, and my mind is buzzing right now, you'll have to forgive me for starting to ramble. I might come back and try to fill in some more.

I'm leaning away from that because Cayde-6 worked as a body guard for Dr. Sundaresh at one point and was completely smitten (though she didn't so much as notice him). I feel like Cayde-6 would've made some mention of it. Was there any piece of evidence that pointed you more in that direction over the Stranger? Or maybe not! Who knows? And yes, the Exo Stranger is, in my opinion, absolutely tied into FWC. We'll just have to wait and see what lore Bungie drops.

Her personality in the grimoire doesn't match the Exo Stranger in my opinion. Since exos are mind copies of their human selves, I believe they maintain some/most of their human personality (like Cayde appears to) 2. Gut Feel 2: Look at pictures of Lakshmi-2, especially her grimoire card. She looks sad. Like someone who lost a love, like Chioma, the reason she went into the device to start with. 3. "our little cult". Implying it was hers to start. Lakshmi-2 has the fewest wipes of any Exo, longest memory. It just makes sense to me that she would found the FWC, and put herself into an Exo frame. 4. Tin Foil Hat time: last three documented people to enter the device before Maya leaves: [b]Lak[/b]pha, Raje[b]sh[/b], Maya (aka me)....Lakshmi lol . Maya might be the exo stranger, she might be Lakshmi. She might be both (multiple mind copies). Very interested to see as it gets revealed

The tin foil hat keeps out the darkness. My cousin swears by it after he was abducted, lol. Yeah, these are all very valid. I could honestly see either of them being true. It's impossible to know at this point without more to go on. Maybe in their next DLC pack we'll finally get some more Vex cards. I hope they explore more of the ideas they introduced in Vanilla. I've come to appreciate the Hive's lore, but the Vex and Exo and the Stranger? I think those are the most interesting parts of the game's lore. I do like how each race represents some kind of distinct niche, though. Hive is pretty much pure horror fantasy, vex is sci-fi/fantasy, the Fallen are like some sort of historical thing, and the Cabal are obviously a military....thing. This sounded better in my head, I promise.

I would've added a little on her current state, about how in her ghost fragment it talks about how she has stepped in this spot before? It hints at her dimension and timeline traveling. I think she's trying to find the right timeline that they saw in the simulations. But that's just a guess

The vex putting themselves so far forward and so far back that they become a constant the exos are so advanced yet the vex are mindless war machines that are controlled by one mind they are related I think to get to the bottem of the exos we have to know more about the vault and the effects on time perhaps the exos are reverse engineerd vex built after the guardians faild to save the traviler not intelegent at first maybe connected in some way to one another and fighting the vex they began to simulate behaviors of thought effective war machines taught to learn and deffend humanity touching a powerfull a AI copying the structure not knowing how to behave like vex they instead structure themselves to emulate humans then events with the stranger a time traveler exos arnt born they sent build they just arrive at the city with no idea were they come from themselvs maybe sent from the future I just described maybe that's the fall humans from the future sending exos back to deffend earth from the darkness we know Rasputin didn't help he purposely did nothing the exos might be what saved the pockets of humanity that survived the colaps maybe that's why gost can revive some to become guardians reforging them... This is all speculation and just my thoughts but I love lore

It's not accurate.their May be one main one but if you read the GRIMOIRE there's several higher minds. Out of 5, Atheon was like a 4 on the power scale for them. But there's many minds, and it works like this Many of these vex are controlled by the main in their region, then that planet, then the main on Mercury. That main mind of the system is headed by another mind of that part of the Galaxy. The vex are so vast they probably got a lot of the Galaxy if not many galaxies.

I just realised the vex never openly start a fight with the tower or earth you are litteraly led into your first contact with them by exo strange and even then every time you fight them you run into them fighting another race be it the fallen or cabal and when they do act agresivly twords you it's primarily out of self defense they honestly fight our enemys for us allot they actively strike against the fallen and cabal but have never even been seen on earth or the moon this confuses me sure the black garden is bad but really is it we killed it yet the darkness remains I wounder if the vex were ever hostile to humans or were we tricked by the exo stranger to fulfill some goal we are still obliviouse to why start us down a path of conflict when there was no point she says the traveler will heal but it still looks broken though I have noticed that the travelers hull is more intact than in year one tower go look I noticed last night

I think in the book that came with the collectors edition, Cayde talks about him being a human once, who was in love and worked with Dr. Maya Sundaresh!

Venus became incredibly fertile because of the Traveler, and you know it's gotta be warm there. Not only does it look warm, but you have this vast jungle landscape, which, on Earth, is in warm climes. The only vast tower we see on Venus is the Citadel. A few have speculated that THIS is the tower referenced, but I'm not convinced. Not yet. We've only seen one location on Venus, which is a pretty big planet. I think this dream the Exos have isn't a dream at all. I think it was one of their first memories when they were trying to fight their way back to recover their human bodies, but they all failed and had their memory wiped. By who? I don't know. I don't want to venture a guess because there could be characters we haven't yet been introduced to (or haven't yet been created by Bungie).
