Forgetting Machine Guns, Rockets and Snipers and Fusion rifles

Machine gun: Big assault rifle. Rocket: Flying grenade. Sniper: Big marksman rifle. Fusion rifle: doesn't exist.

From what I can tell, they are a prototype directed plasma system. My guess to the reason they fire in bursts is because the system isn't refined enough to focus all the energy into one shot. It would also have high initial damage but heavy damage falloff due to its plasma nature.

Fusion rifles are probably more of a tool that can also be used as a weapon. Probably designed to blow the latch on hatches or something due to the fact you will get mowed down by machine gun fire as the weapon charges.
