One question: is it cheaper to use this P2P host system than to have dedicated servers?

Edited by dtdionne: 11/21/2015 1:42:39 AMThere are con's to server based fps...and there are certainly costs associated with p2p, but I'd be interested to see how crucible might fare server based. The main pro for p2p is TTK (time to kill), the main con(s)...lag (intentional or otherwise), the plethora of ways dirtbags introduce intentional lag, and the difficulty differentiating between the two. Strategic lag, imho would be the easiest to ferret out. Hell, It could be done in bash, python, perl, etc...

Of course. Each dedicated server requires you to be paying for hosting, and management. Which adds to a lot of costs.

So we could say this is simply a matter of saving money?

Edited by Unforgiven: 9/8/2015 9:11:58 AMYea lots of games use P2P system these days. Warframe is an example. But its a very unstable system for internet connections because it relies heavily on a host connection. And many people game on Wireless or Economy or Sattelite or dialup connections which are not stable. So if a host connection goes out, or becomes slow, it becomes an issue very quickly. But not everything in Destiny is P2P. Tower for example doesn't use P2P. Its a server. So Bungie calls it a hybrid system. Patrol is also not P2P I don't think.

Im not surprised with warframe (although I know they are doing well) but Bungie and Activision? What often surprises me is how little money huge, huge companies put into their network to make it stable. Maybe Im just donning my tin foil hat here, but it seems like they just want to make money and are not prepared to fork out on what I see as a service people have paid for many times over through the years already by supporting previous games and literally keeping companies afloat. Bungie, not so much, but Activision have horrendous amounts of money. Its no joke to say Activision Blizzard have more power than some countries.

Edited by Unforgiven: 9/8/2015 11:38:08 AMPeople that make money, find ways to cut costs as much as they can. Be it on development of games, or the infrastructure to support those games. Destiny uses p2p hybrid system which requires minimal infrastructure to support.

Yeah, I guess thats how they make money, these businessmen really know what they are doing. Its impressive and horrifying at the same time. The Activision Blizzard board of Directors sleep around with people like Coca-cola Avon and Goldman Sachs, who are in turned owned by people like Apple and Facebook. Again, Im adding to my tin foil hat in most peoples view, but they hold more power than countries. All of the countries. Corporations are the new governments of the world. I just wish, that with all that power, they could build some decent blimmin servers. And not charge £40 for TTK.
