It can be super fun, and super not fun, but it's addicting. And the game maker Riot supports the game well, constantly coming out with new characters and skins.

seems like there is a lot of variety in the game, anything that can help figure out how to play?

Just start playing. You will get it eventually. Start with learning a few of the free characters each week, get a feel for the way the game flows. Once you learn character well you can start understanding individual roles and builds. Also, something that really helps is watching pro games or twitch. Some are helpful, but it allows you to see strategy and builds, and shows you how to use the champs. It is really helpful
