Help! Should I buy The Taken King? Age 72
I hate to keep mentioning the fact that I'm 72 - but I am and my age severely affects my play in Destiny. My reflexes are slower, hand/eye coordination is worse and my eyesight is poorer than younger players. I also have periferal neuropathy in my hands (that's a medial condition that causes you to lose feeling in your hands and feet). I'm not complaining, just stating facts. No sympathy please.
I've played every day since late January 2015 and Destiny is the first and only video game I ever played until that point. Through persistence and some luck (the GHorn dropped on me an April) I've managed to get my three characters to level 32 but can't get them leveled any further. I stink in the Crucible and have never done the VOG or Crota's End simply because I didn't want anyone feeling like they had to wait for me or I was slowing them down. I also get killed a lot so I need to be revived a lot. I have managed to succeed in POE but I went to Machine Wrath from POE with another 32 and a 33 and we got smoked - several times. I would really like to continue with Destiny but I've seen that the levels are going to 40 and if I can't get any higher than 32 now, why should I buy something I can't play? Any advice would be appreciated.

I can't do crucible because I have the mere reactions of a 52 year old and until I accidnetally bumped into a really great band of players one day (that includes other 50+ and 60+ year olds) I have played alone so there's no chance of getting beyond 32.5 on 3 characters because everything beyond that involved co-operative team play. I'm guessing that at 72 you are retired so I can't think of a more relaxing way of whiling away your free time than playing Destiny so fo the sake of £40 (or whatever it is where you are) I'd have thought that TTK wolud buy several hundred more hours of cheap and cheerful entertainment - so I'd go for it. While we haven't seen all the details or the system in action I actually like this proposed change from equipment (and hence random drop) based levelling to basing it on XP and what you actually do so I'd like to believe that there won't be silly 32.5 "bars" for us in future if we prefer to play alone without being forced into raid/PoE teams. It should be possible for anyone to reach 40 simply by pouring in the hours and gaining XP from just kills, bounties, Strikes or whatever. By the way, as an experiment in the last week I created a new account on my PS4 so I could have 3 new characters without affecting the three 32.5s I have. I managed to finish the original story line and get to lvel 20 in just a shade over 9 hours. It's a real eye opener to go back to XP based levelling and also to remember how frequently you would get a gun, fully upgrade it then simply discard it as you got a "better" one to replace it. As I'll probably start another character from the start for TTK just to exeperience it all from scratch this was useful practice of what's to come. EDIT: I see you are on PSN - is that PS3 or PS4? If PS4 I'd happily team up with you some time to try some of the harder stuff (like PoE32 for example) though we might need to get a 3rd player along for something like that.

Hell yeah you should, gramps! There's gonna be tons of shit to shoot and fun to have no matter how high your level is. Consider joining a clan. Mine is called Rise of Old Dudes and we are all younger than you but still pretty fvckin old. I'd be proud to help you accomplish some things you haven't yet done. I'm lame as shit so if I can do it, you've got a great shot at doing it too. Search for Rise of Old Dudes, Rise of 0ld Dudes (spinoff clan with a zero instead of o in the word "0ld"), or Rise of Old Dudes UK if you're in that part of the world. Much respect dude.

1 ReplyIt's only $40 and if you're having fun then by all means have at it. I'm 50 and I really enjoy playing this game. I'm impressed that you play since you're generation didn't really grow up with video games like us Gen X'ers so game on my good man. So what if you only get to level 37 or 38 you'll have a blast doing it and who knows maybe you will reach 40.

2 RepliesYou level up by just shooting stuff, no matter where in the game. Actually it would be easier for you to level up. Check out the100 https://www.the100.io/?r=70688 you can probably find a whole lot of guardians with the same playing style/age/level/playing hours as your own. You'll be doing VOG in your own pace in no time. Have fun!

My my. 79 and gaming. I hope to be that way when I hit that age. Good for you. Since you're stuck at 32; you'll need some etheric light to level up the last mile. That will only be accomplished by PoE or Crucible. Since neither aren't really a solid option for you, don't think 34 is attainable yet for you. But with TTK, it'll be xp based so you'll, eventually, hit max level as long as you keep playing. I'd say go for it and get it. As long as you find enjoyment in this game, keep playing. Doesn't matter if you ever get to max level so long as you're having fun with it.

1 ReplyYou should buy it. The leveling system will be changed so it doesn't matter what armor you wear. You will level based on experience doing things.

The leveling system will new. It will be easy to get to level 40. As easy as it was to get to 20. Just takes more time. If u enjoy destiny and patrolling and strikes then destiny is probably about to get a lot better for u

Yes, the new leveling system in TTK is experience-based, so getting raid gear and stuff like that won't be necessary to level up. You can get to level 40 just by playing the game.

If you like playing the game then definitely buy it where else can you spend $40 and get thousand hours of fun nowhere and if you're on Xbox one I had my gamer tag and hit me up anytime to play

Hey, definitely pick it up. It's an xp system so you don't have to worry about finding that armor with more light. Glad destiny pulled you into the video game world. I run with a clan between ages of 21 - 40. Totally wouldn't mind expanding that gap if you ever did want to raid or play PoE. Psn tag is in profile!

I think it's awesome that you game at 72. Hope I still can. Not sure what console you are on but if it is xb1 you can add me and our group can get you guys through some of that stuff. I have been away for about 2 months due to travel but am getting back on regular in a few days and plan to start by kicking Skolas in the ass right before TTK.
