What others do: Turtle Knight (my suggestion for starters)
What I play: Dodge and roll mage (more of an advanced play style)
Wear medium to heavy armor and use the best shield you can. Once you pick up on basic boss and mob mechanics you'll be able to choose more freely with weapon and armor choices. A free piece of advice, look up how to get the dragon sword and use it up until blightown. Then switch to a halberd. Also don't trust corners, and expect everything to be a trap.

I usually have a melee weapon (low stamina high damage) as backup in case I run out of spells. In dark souls it's always best to prepare for the worst.

Same, although in ds2, where magic was more powerful, I never ever touched a melee weapon all the way through NG++

Farthest I've gotten with magic was NG+++. After that it's back to a turtle knight.
