Legendaries will be left behind, which I am fine with. You can still wear the armor you have now to still be max level. I'm going to be rockin Osiris armor for sure when TTK comes out. However legendary weapons will be replaced quickly by the newer weapons. Our exotics will continue to be upgradable in our journey.

Max level? I thought light levels were out.

Yeah, but the new level for TTK is level 40. We will all start at the level we are when TTK launches. Light levels are out and we will need XP to get to level 40.

Light levels aren't out. They've been changed into a combination that's determined by your defense and attack stats. It's basically a WoW leveling system

So if I had a full set of VOG gear ascended to level 34, I will start TTK at 34 and then 35-40 will be based off xp gained right? Though not recommended, I could sit in a spawn and kill enemies non stop for like 5,000 hrs and do nothing else to hit 40?
