Why would they do this?
The Windows 10 edition sucks, it's just a port of the phone pocket edition..

They haven't moved over minecraft yet, they are in the process of doing so. For now you can still get the java version.

Yes, it is currently simply a port of the pocket edition however they've mentioned on building upon it. I can't say anything post Windows 8 as I'm very unfamiliar with it all. Have yet to upgrade my computer.
