awww other people didnt have as tough a time gettin (item) as i did. that means this is breaking the game.
if i bought icebreaker from xur, then it dropped for me on my next strike, which one did i "earn"?

Earning is not really the point. The point is that these items should drop in end game activities and you should have them because you played and did these activities, not because you got 13 coins from doing something a noob can do.

The issue is they don't drop at end game activities very often. I can't think of a single exotic piece of armor or weapon I own that didn't come from Xür or a bounty. So that forces normal people to focus on any mission that will yield strange coins. They grind it out for the coins. Just as you did for Skolas. Just two routes that delivered the same result. Finally a weekly heroic strike on hard is not a "noob" event. A nightfall strike is not a "noob" event. VoG and Crota are not "noob" events.
