Wait I'm confused. Is something happening to the old legendary gear that we still have and have ascended?

Hi thanks for the message, it has been confirmed by Bungie that you will not be able to ascend your year 1 legendary gear in the "The Taken King" making it obsolete and paving the way for new weapons and armour. They have said you will be able to use it early on in the DLC but you cannot upgrade armour to lvl 40 or weapons to the new damage upgrade. Sad but true.

Also it fallows an mmo path better. This way there's a point to lower levels and gear that you collect from raids when you are starting out. Kind of makes me feel like all the reforging I have been doing is for nothing though. I guess there will always be at least one huge draw back when changing and entire system.
