Let's say the game cost ten million to make, but They've already made 20 million in preorders.. The game is a success and no one has even played it. The dev then only has to get something passable out the door with minimal features and attention to detail, and even then if it's still broke they just throw a day one patch out. No preorders means the developer won't just coast and give us a shit product.

Video games are not the only industry to do this you realize? Books, Movies, anything made by Apple, they all have some kind of "pre-order". The explanation is that investors want a return, and unless you somehow convince them and the entire community that plays games then it's not going to happen. The simple and easy solution to all this is if your unsure about a game, then don't pre-order it..., but just because it's such a big deal for you doesn't mean anything for everyone else.
-
I know how to do it. Pre order is useless, I haven't not been able to get whatever game on launch day since the nineties all without preoders. The simple fact is that they drag the quality down. Pre ordering movies? What idiot does this? I see that on Google play and the movie is still in theaters. Those people are simply stupid and there is no explanation.
-
The developer has no incentive to do this. The publisher might rush the game or be resistant to budge on a release date, but developers aren't a hive mind. They're people too. They don't all collectively decide to take a vacation because of preorders.
-
Lacking preorders however gives more incentive to make something more successful, the difference is knowing what your getting... (with many preorders, a game can get certain higher ratings before it is even released, which provides a somewhat decent reputation before a game is even reviewed..., If you do not offer preorders, you have more incentive to push out a better quality product (cause you are more desperate to get better reputation and sales, compared to preordering, and reaching financial needs, allowing a less incentive driven development on the project...) Also depends on how laws, and offers are made on a refund policy... Did I make any sense there?

The tragedy is that they do.

Edited by ROBERTO jh: 7/20/2015 5:45:23 PMNo they really don't. Most game developers don't see any of the profits. Developers who answer to a big name publisher or at best going to get a bonus, but otherwise are funded a set salary. The publishers are the ones who see all the profits. In fact the only self published AAA studio that I can think of off the top my head is Bethesda, and they make among the best games out there, with a very consumer friendly plan. All game developers do is develop the game. Preorders don't affect them whatsoever.
-
You realize the game is pretty much done by the time people preorder the game? Also pre orders can be canceled so they don't have the money yet. You are retarded.
-
No I'm just right and you aren't. If the game was done it wouldn't need a huge ass patch. Was batman pc done? No. was MCC done? No. was battlefield 3/4 done? No. ass creed unity? No just no. If they knew there was no guarantee the games would be better.
-
What I'm saying is preordering doesn't make game companies just stop working on their games. The fact that you said "no I'm just right and you aren't" proves you are a 14 year old kid that has no idea what they are talking about.
-
Preordering provides less incentive :P,
-
Not even remotely close to reality but lol. That was funny.
-
Oddly, it is extremely close to reality... preordering, or pre paying, ( dependent on the context ) provides less incentive for quality work...
-
Not at all.
