Maybe they won't talk specifics because they've been directed not to. Your premise relies too heavily on the idea they are aware they are selling snake oil, but trying to convince us otherwise, when it is more likely that they know how hard they are working to create content and really believe it's worth it.
I think that idea gets lost in critique often. Even bad games have people that work really hard on them and they want that fact to show through when consumers purchase. That personal attachment colors how they speak of the game. Their intent is not to mislead, it's the inherent bias of that personal attachment.
