I've never understood the appeal of backwards compatibility. I didn't pay hundreds of £'s for a new machine just to play the games I already own.
To each their own, but I say 'bring on the new games'.

Ur not paying £400 JUST to play old games

I'm not paying £400 (or £350) to play old games at all. I understand that it might be a cool feature to some, but even way back when the PS2 was released it all seemed pointless to me. With so little time to play new games, why waste it on old ones? And, if I really wanted to, why not just dig out my old machines and really wallow in the nostalgia?
