Assuming the Christian viewpoint for a moment, one would have to remember that Christ's arrival massively shook up the relationship between God and humanity. God's actions of violent retribution in the Old Testament became largely unnecessary with the sacrifice of Christ serving as spiritual payment for the sins of mankind. Similarly, this made many previous laws and traditions still held by the Jewish faith irrelevant for Christians.
